Hi! I'm Mrs. Houston, a grade five science and math teacher at Baden Academy Charter School in western Pennsylvania. |
I joined Houston Solution in 2020. I am interested in, space, math, and d&d. I want to dual major in math and education, and I want to be a math teacher. My favorite quote is “I don’t know why people who have not been on rockets continue to ask, ‘you’re not scared?’ no we were not scared.. until something happens, then it’s time to get scared.”– Buzz Aldrin

History
It is in fifth grade that many children begins to see themselves as successful math students. This year can be a turning point for them. I am there to be that inspiration for them, creating an environment where every student in my classroom walks away with the confidence in math.
I found one of the best ways to do that is to give them real world problems that need mathematics to solve them. Space is one of those great places where there's an endless supply of problems to solve.
Students in my classroom learn strategies to compute equations with decimals, fractions, and whole numbers. They learn how to analyze their work. They also learn how to recognize their mistakes and turn those mistakes into learning moments.
All of them are challenged to notice in every area of life the details in their work, the "why" in math, not just answers.
Growth mindset is a must in my classroom. All of us are challenged in ways unexpected, making math come alive in the vast expanse of all of space and time.
